Nowadays, teddy bears and flowers are favorite gifts for any occasion. A lovable teddy bear is given during a baby christening. It is a box of sterling roses for a wedding anniversary. A birthday is best celebrated with a stuffed teddy bear that comes with a bouquet of flowers. A sweetheart will enjoy cuddling with a life-sized stuffed Koala while holding her box of pink roses. A fantastic housewarming gift is a pair of his and hers teddy bear, plus a pot of chrysanthemums.

Giving bears and flowers as gifts don’t even need any special occasion. One just gives bears and flowers to show love, gratitude, surprise, even condolences and get-well-soon wishes. Gift giving is said to trace its origins to the birth of the human race. Historical chronicles allege that gifts were initially used for bartering possessions. Giving away lands as a form of inheritance was likewise considered as a form of gift-giving. Gifts exchanged by the preeminent strata of society conveyed gratitude, revitalised friendships or earned favors.

Gifts also carry hidden meanings. Ancient Romans gave gifts of coins for prosperity, lamps to illuminate one’s journey through life, and pastries for happiness. The Three Wise Men presented the Baby Jesus gifts of myrrh, frankincense and gold. Persians exchanged eggs as gifts, symbolizing fertility. Giving flowers as a gift could also stand for love, sincerity, strength of character, etc. etc. Teddy bears represent nurture and care. They also evoke feelings of warmth.

The tradition of giving flowers has an early history. Grave sites of long ago have yielded evidence of floral fossils. Stories about giving flowers as gifts are likewise aplenty in Egyptian hieroglyphics, very old Chinese writings and even ancient Greek and Roman mythology. Giving flowers was regarded by early civilizations as an efficient way of conveying views, ideas and emotions. Ancient Greeks thought flowers had an affinity with the divine. Giving flowers as gifts was sustained throughout the Middle Ages. The French and the English also sustained the practice of gifting flowers alive.

A hunting incident involving former United States President Theodore Roosevelt was the inspiration for the teddy bear. In 1902, President Roosevelt was invited by the Mississippi Governor Andrew H. Longino to go hunting. Several attendants of President Roosevelt tied a black bear to a willow tree and asked the President to blast it. However, the President refused because he thought it was very unsportsmanlike. The bear was still shot though, upon his orders, to free it of its misery. A political cartoon was made out of this incident.

Morris Michton was then inspired by this political sketch to create a novel toy. A stuffed bear cub was what this brand-new toy was. In honor of President Roosevelt, he named his creation Teddy’s bear, after the former President’s nickname. The President was sent a sample of his namesake and Mr Michton received permission to use the leader’s nickname. A stuffed bear was also made in Germany from the designs of Richard Steiff. The 1903 edition of the Leipzig Toy Fair, held in March, featured these toys. Come 1906, the teddy bear craze became full-fledged. What followed, as most people would allege, is history.

Indeed, the custom of giving teddy bears and flowers as gifts endures. By the way, there is a rose named Teddy Bear.
